Eyewashes and safety showers are emergency systems used in both public and private industry to protect an employee from injury in case of contact with hazardous chemicals, chemical compounds or fire. Hazardous chemicals can also affect people who work in food industries, or with cleaning solutions, and in manufacturing industries and service establishments.Įyewashes and safety showers were developed in response to the increased use of hazardous chemicals. Employees who manufacture hazardous chemical products are at risk, of course. Accidents involving hazardous chemicals can be especially severe. Although regulations and standards, personal protective equipment, and safety training are used, accidents still happen. Have someone bring or fax the Safety Data Sheet for the chemical to the doctor.In today’s industries, many safety precautions and types of emergency equipment must be used to protect and ensure the health of employees.Call UC San Diego Poison Control at (800) 222-1222 for advice, and then seek medical attention immediately.Every second counts. Use a clean lab coat to provide the victim with privacy and warmth. Remove contaminated clothing, jewelry, and shoes.Protect the eyes from inadvertent contamination. Immediately flush the affected area with copious quantities of water for at least 15 minutes.Call Facilities Management at (858) 534-2930 as soon as possible to collect water where drains are not installed. Never let that stop you from using the equipment if needed. Don't hesitate to use them immediately when needed.ĭrains are rarely designed into floor plans to accommodate emergency shower stations. Note: Some outdoor emergency showers may run discolored (rusty) water for a few seconds. Delaying treatment, even for a few seconds, may result in irreparable tissue damage.
